Great Cars on PBS

I just stumbled over this site for a series shown on PBS television in the US. The series is called ‘Great Cars’ and started airing in January 2004.

The guide, available at the Great Cars website, shows that there was a Saab episode in the series.

Has anyone seen this, or have a copy of it on tape? If anyone’s interested, it appears that you can order either an entire series (13 episodes) or individual episodes on either VHS or DVD. The Saab episode is $15.95 on VHS or $19.95 on DVD.

Might have to get me one of those, and a region-free DVD player to boot!

There’s some other impressive marques in the series too: Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Ferrari, Cadillac, BMW (grrrrr), Corvette, Mini, Jeep, Volkswagen and more….

  1. Hey! I’m a fellow enthusiast on my 2nd SAAB. Do you know where to get the Seinfeld episode that features his SAAB purchase agonizing? I’ve never seen it.

  2. Molly, I wish I did. Obviously I’m a Saab fan (duh!) but I’m also a huge Seinfeld fan as well. We have several series on DVD at home, but none of the episodes have that on it.

If you find it, please let me know…

  3. i just ordered the pbs “saab” episode.

i’m sure it will broaden my saab

    “vocabulary.”

    thanks for the post, swade!

  4. 9x,

Please let me know what you think of it. I’m considering getting it myself, though being here in Oz, there may be playability issues – so I want to know it’s good before I bother.

    Cheers.

  5. Looks like an awesome series, wish I could afford all 3 seasons!

I’ll probably end up with the Saab and Volvo episode and maybe a few others.

  6. I have the SAAB DVD, and I found it very interesting. If memory serves me correctly, it ends around 1994/96 on an overly optimistic note production-wise. I mostly enjoyed the beginning where they show the 92001 being test driven. They later make a big point about how the 2-cycle rally successes probably hurt SAAB by holding up development of a 4-cycle SAAB. Some nice rally action shots including the 99.

BTW, I don’t have a DVD burner so I can’t copy it, but overall, I recommend it. If you have a Tivo, program it to catch anything with SAAB in the title, and maybe it will catch it sooner or later.

  7. An update to my post just above. Ouch! I had the DVD mixed up with Voyages on the History channel where they covered SAAB. Sorry. But the DVD is great, and does show the 92001 in action, once in color. I still recommend it though, some great insights and action shots.

  8. Ted, I’d love to see the History Channel show. I’ve heard about it before. There’s a video for sale at Amazon that I’m thinking of getting too, which may be the same one.

Unfortunately here in Australia, TiVo is something that we have to dream of for the future!

  9. it’s wonderful! it starts at the beginning

and goes to the 9-3, including brief foot-

age and commentary of the 9-3x.

what a beautiful tribute to the brand.

    length: ~25 minutes.
