A press release from Saab Germany released on Monday states that the Saab 9-5 Biopower will be made available to German customers from the end of November.

It looks like the Biopower models will cost an additional 1,000 Euros on top of the regular gasoline-powered models, which start at 30,450 for the Linear sedan and 31,500 Euros for the SportCombi.

A dodgy, but still readable Babelfish translation of the press release is over the jump.

Ruesselsheim – which extended on the international motor show (IAA) in Frankfurt as world premiere presented recent generation of the Saab 9-5 series on the German market starting from at the beginning of of 2006 by a particularly pollution free model: the Saab 9-5 bio power, which with bio ethanol (E85) or with pure gasoline in each conceivable combination can be operated alternatively. The flexible Fuel Vehicle is offered as sedan and sport combi and be based on that 9-5 2.0t.

Opposite that the Saab has 110 KW/150 HP strong basis model with petrol engine 9-5 2.0t in the bio power execution and with refueling with E85 an output of 132 KW/180 HP. The plus at environment-friendliness and Leistungsfaehigkeit get the Saab customer to the surcharge of only 1,000 euro in relation to the gasoline he version 2.0t, those as sedan 30,450 euro (inclusive 16 % VAT), when sport combi costs 31,500 euro (in each case in the Design line linear). The new Saab bio power model can be ordered starting from at the end of November with the German Saab partners, the distribution of the vehicles begins in the course of the first quarter 2006.

On the Swedish homeland market of the Premiummarke the flexible Fuel model is started few weeks ago with large success into the sales. Bio power models constitute nearly half of sales of the Saab 9-5 in Sweden for the moment. And this relationship will still more strongly change according to estimate of Saab, if starting from January of the coming yearly also the automatic transmission is available. As next step Saab plans the realization of a bio power version for the sport sedan, the new sport combi and the Cabriolet of the model family 9-3.

“Since the introduction of the bio power model to Sweden the interest in a Saab operated with ethanol awoke also in Germany. In view of the high fuel prices and a rising environmental awareness look for the drivers meaningful and above all also payable alternatives to classical propulsion principles and fuels. We reacted to these demands. With the new flexible Fuel Vehicle we wear in the future such — the managing director of the Saab Germany GmbH, Knuth Sexauer ordered in the program “, says.

And it continues to explain: “Saab occupies a top position in the Premiumsegment with the series 9-5 and the offer of three different drives with gasoline, Diesel and ethanol. We hope now that the mineral oil manufacturers in Germany the increasing interest of customer with an appropriate infrastructure of gas stations with bio ethanol taps become fair.”

Ethanol is manufactured in Sweden and in other countries commercially from agriculturally cultivated useful plants or out in the forest arising pflanzenresten. Differently than with the gasoline manufactured on the basis of oil the burn does not increase the portion of the “greenhouse gas” carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, contributing to the climatic heating up, of ethanol, since the emissions resulting while driving become balanced by the CO2-Anteil, which was extracted from the atmosphere with the cultivation of the useful plants needed for the production of the fuel.

Ethanol in Sweden and in others in contrast arrived at it by the consumption of fossil gasoline “new” CO2 into the atmosphere, without which too “recyceln”, which is already there. In Sweden ethanol in the mixing proportion is sold of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline as E85-Kraftstoff and contributes to a reduction of the CO2-Ausstosses of up to 80 per cent in the comparison to the gasoline burn.

Of course the Saab has 9-5 2.0t bio power all other novelties, which were presented with the world premiere of the revised recent generation of the upper middle class by Saab. The recent generation of the Saab 9-5, the at the end of November in the areaarea areas of the Saab partner introduction keeps had, beside the bio power drive further five engines of classical execution: the Benziner 2.0t (110 KW/150 HP), 2.3t (136 KW/185 HP), 2.3T (162 KW/220 HP) and 2,3 turbo aero, which carries now 191 KW/260 HP out (so far 184 KW/250 HP), as well as the turbo-Diesel TiD with most modern Common Rail common-Rail-Direkteinspritzung, standard particle filter and 110 KW/150 HP of achievement.

All engines are supplied in series to combination with a five-gearbox, for the Benziner and the Diesel are available optionally a mechanism with five steps. It enclosure for the Benziner also the Saab Sentronic function, the driver can determine thus the courses when desired manual sequenziell. The drive takes place in each case on the front wheels.

The equipment concepts were arranged new for the Saab 9-5 of the model year course 2006: Linear and Vector remain as Design lines in the offer, likewise the aero as ultimative flagship of the series. To the place now a Classic package, which fulfills inclusive seat heating, instrument panel in dark walnussholz and integrated fog headlights the requirements of the Saab customers, steps the past Design line Arc, who for a rather classical Interieur decides with leather equipment. The Classic package offers a customer advantage of 800 euro in the comparison to the earlier Arc equipment.

Vector and aero offer in the interior metallic-technically seeming surfaces (“Tech Design”) and obtain – like already the external appearance of the vehicle – sportyness purely. The Design line linear has already as entrance stage both in comfort and in security and optics all important features on board: adaptive front and side Airbags, active head restraints (SAHR = Saab Active Head Restraint), anti-skid system (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), leather steering wheel with audio control elements, air conditioning mechanism, light alloy wheels and Exterieur extent in car color.

The clear changes in the styling of the front portion are common to all new models of the series 9-5 – interferences handing similarly far it did not give since the introduction of the classical author Saab 900 in the year 1979 to no more. Into the two outside elements of the traditional radiator grille with three inlets the headlights are now integrated. At the tail the new groups of lights complete the schnoerkellose and clear Design also excluding red tinted windshields.

The extensive Facelifting of the Saab 9-5 makes the upper middle class of the Swedish car manufacturer still more modern and more competitive: It offers an unusual driving experience with all positive character characteristics of the mark to the customers. And also in the price comes to meet the 9-5 the Saab customers clearly.

  1. I know that there are many folks who wish to see the BioPower sold here in the States. However, it’s been pointed out again and again that we don’t have the E85 infrastructure (yet) to sustain it.

Here’s an idea: sell a “special edition” BioPower just in the states with high-concentrations of E85 filling stations (the Midwest) for a start. That would get the BioPower a foothold in the country and hopefully word of it would spread from there.

Between 1996 and 2004 GM leased (yes, leased. They refused to flat-out sell them) a forward-looking fully-electric car called the EV1 in only a couple of states where they were deemed more likely to be accepted. They were only for lease in California and Arizona.

I’m guessing very little (if anything) on the 9-5 BioPower would be required to be retrofitted for sale in the U.S. (to meet DOT regulations) as regular gasoline SportWagons (er… SportCombis) are already for sale here. It’s like pure profit for SAAB/GM and it expands their product offerings for almost nothing.

  2. Grip, Agreed. They’re flex-fuel so there’s very little on the surface that would stop them from selling them. All it takes is a boardroom decision and “Hey presto!” they’re being progressive instead of late to the party. If they could get some positive feedback in the few states there that have some e85 infrastructure, then they have a lead on the competition.

It’s pretty simple on the surface. Maybe there’s some barriers to entry that we don’t know about and if so, it’d be good of GM to tell people why they can’t get what they want.

  3. I am good friends with somebody who had the opportunity to lease an EV1, ironically after he sold his Swedish car (Volvo V80) back to the dealer under CA Lemon law.

I don’t want to get into too much speculation and mud-slinging here, but long story short: Look at all the evidence, everything that went on, and it’s almost impossible to deny there’s some sort of conspiracy going on between the big car companies and the big oil companies…and it’s disgusting because the end result is that we’re stuck driving cars that, at best, are still 50%+ less efficient that what is technologically possible…TODAY…

  4. I think you’re 100% right, Ryan. There’s definitely something smelly surrounding Big Oil. Ironical in the world’s model of a ‘free market’ economy.

  5. Fred,

I guess there’s room for both (maybe) and the technology’s there. This one’s smiled upon so much because of the ‘green factor’ (and perhaps the octane boost, too).

I’ll leave it to better scientific minds than mine to argue the merits of each case.
