Edmunds Inside Line are quoting a UK site as saying that Saab is the midst of developing the 9-4x and may even have a concept rushed and ready for the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006. It’s rumoured to be on the same Sigma platform as the Caddy BRX.
There has been talk of a 9-4x before so the existence isn’t so much of a surprise, but the readiness for Geneva will be a bonus if the report is true.
UPDATE II (update 1 now erased): the UK site is Channel 4’s car site and the report there is quoting Jan-Ake Johnsson at a launch for the 9-5.
At the launch of the revised 9-5 saloon and estate this week, a Saab spokesman confirmed to 4Car that this project was under way and hinted that its name would be 9-4X, denoting its positioning in the Saab line-up between the 9-3 and 9-5 ranges.
Although he could not reveal details, it’s a safe bet that this car will share its underpinnings and powertrains with the upcoming Cadillac BRX, much as the Cadillac BLS, which will be launched next spring, shares its platform with the Saab 9-3. Both 9-4X and BRX will be developed from the 9-3/BLS platform, also used for the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra, Signum and other related models in the GM family.
What’s interesting about this is that Edmunds are claiming a platform named ‘Sigma’, but the source article is saying it’s on the 9-3/BLS platform, which is the current Epsilon platform. Why does this matter? Well, if you read this post from earler in the week, you’ll see that there’s been an epsilon based SUV in the wings for some time.
Saab will get a Crossover. The Swedish design department have worked for some time at this model, in which they have tried to make a car with Saab values from the beginning, so says an employee of the fabric to AutoTelegraaf.nl. The car, a cross between a hatchback, combi and an SUV, has been developed the last months, parallel with the Crossover based on the Subaru crossover (Tribeca). Saab will start sales late 2007, at the earliest.
Could a 9-3x finally come into fruition? Even if it’s a 5-door version, wouldn’t that set the cat amongst the German pigeons? Finally, an AWD Saab that can really put the power down.
We’ll wait and watch, but rock on Geneva.
In the same report on 4Car, they say that there will quite possibly be another concept unveiled as well – possibly a Sonett inspired roadster on the Kappa platform.
