Will the real 9-4x please stand up?

The most recent reports coming out of Europe on the proposed Saab crossover, dubbed as the 9-4x, have been billing it as a vehicle built on the new Epsilon platform. It’s been hinted that these will be built at Trollhattan, along with their Cadillac twin.

There’s one fish that’s been consistently swimming against the tide – Edmunds Inside Line. Edmunds have been saying since day 1 that’s going to be a Theta-based vehicle. Well, they’re at it again:

The Cadillac BRX and the Saab 9-4X, as suppliers are calling the new vehicles, are expected to go into production in mid-to-late 2008. GM has indicated that it wants to assemble the vehicles at its Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. A third model, which may go to Buick, could join the Cadillac and Saab in production for model-year 2009…..

….All three models are intended to play in the premium segment now occupied by Acura, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz. Prices will likely range from about $35,000 to $45,000.

The new premium midsize crossovers will be built on what is described by GM suppliers as a long-wheelbase variant of the Theta platform that underpins the Chevrolet Equinox, the Pontiac Torrent and the Saturn Vue. They are expected to seat seven passengers and will be lavishly equipped. The vehicles reportedly will be offered in both front- and all-wheel-drive versions and are expected to be powered by a 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Now if I could just get someone at Saab that’s willing to clarify the issue and give us something definite to look forward to…..

FYI, here’s a picture of the Saturn Vue from Edmunds (NOT!! see below). Think Saab body panels, a more car-like stance, Saab tuning and a bit of a stretched wheelbase…..

Addendum: My thanks to Alan and Ken for drawing attention to the fact that in my light night stupor I wrote Saturn, then saw the picture of the Vue and said “Damn that’s ugly!!” then changed pics for the Pontiac. Unfortunately I forgot to update the text after changing the picture. The pitfalls of posting late at night….

  1. Norway calling! ;/)
Maybe ’the success’ with SAAB 9-7X has given GM the fuel they need to continue in that track? I am absolutely not sure that I like that thought, even the 9-7X might be better or more SAABish than many hardcore SAAB enthusiasts are willing to admit. With a diesel in it, it might as well have been something for the European market, as a start at least…….
No, if SAAB is going for a SUV or similar type of vehicle they should absolutely clean the dust of one of their own concepts instead. I am still not convinced that we won’t see a SUV-a-like SAAB ‘based on’ 9-3 SC or one of the other SAAB 9X concepts. The rumours are floating more than ever, and it is indeed an exciting issue. I guess we’ll be a little bit enlightened up front the Geneva Car Saloon next year.

    Now, where is my crystalball?

  2. Uh, that’s a Pontiac Torrent, not Saturn Vue. But it’s ok Swade, you’re not liable for confusing a GM model since there’s *always* another stablemate almost just like it 🙁

I agree with Olav that something resembling the old 9-3X will make it to production in the form of the 9-4X. Don’t ask me about whether it’ll be on an Epsilon, Theta etc, etc ……. sounds more like a melange of frat groups in a university !

  3. Oh and as for the crystal ball, I have a tiny one on top of my 9000’s dash. They say it’s the sun sensor for the ACC, but I swear if I look closely I see vague images of future Saab models ……..

  4. Thanks to you, SaabKen, I found my crystall ball. Where? On the glareshield of my 9-5 SportCombi off course. I’ve been watching it closely since then………. hm, interesting. ;/)

  5. Olav. Nice to hear from you again. I thought you’d been taken hostage by a band of hostile herring! But then again you would have seen them coming through the crystal ball…..

  6. Hi, Swade. Our herring are extremely nasty and hostile at this time of year, but if they turn too nasty and hostile we just eat them ;/). Now, back to the crystal ball. I’ll be back.
