A week or so ago I took exception to The Truth About Cars doing an entire article on ‘wagons’ and not including the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi in the mix.
So what’s better than getting a re-write of an old article to include 1 reference to the Saab?
William Montgomery takes the Aero version of the ‘Combi for a spin and whilst there’s no letting up on the usual TTAC death-of-a-thousand-cuts writing style, there’s also no doubt that the 9-3 SportCombi Aero proved it’s mettle in the end:
….the SportCombi’s power and handling are superb for a family hauler. Taken as a whole, there’s no question that the Combi deserves a place in the pistonhead’s pantheon of Euro-style station wagons. We stand corrected.
William’s dislikes are things that have been noted before. The comparatively cheaper interior feel for example, and the adequacy of the ‘premium’ sound system. Both of these have been addressed to a degree in the 2007 Aero, though, and it’d be very interesting to see how this review would change if an ’07 model were available. (Note: they use ’07 pics in the article, but he actually drove an ’06)
Another dislike was something new to me though, a lack of rear legroom. Can’t say I’ve ever heard of this being mentioned as a problem before.
The likes were plentiful and substantial:
….The SportCombi Aero’s sport-tuned suspension lowers the car by 10mm and stiffens up the shocks and springs. The set-up delivers an ideal balance of body control and road feel….
…Equally admirable, torque steer is virtually nonexistent– without compromising steering feel….
….The autobox is biased towards sports driving; it delivers crisp, accurate shifts….
….The glove leather chairs are amazingly comfortable and endlessly supportive…..
….The SportCombi saves its greatest pleasures for enthusiastic drivers. Awaken its 250hp turbo-fed 2.8-liter V6 engine and the exhaust’s velvety burble speaks of the good times to come. If you like straight-line shove, the wagon won’t disappoint….
A recommended read.
