Another Saab Europe press release.
This one deals with the growth in Biopower sales……
Booming Sales for Saab 9-5 BioPower
Saab 9-5 BioPower sales in Sweden are exceeding expectations as thousands of drivers switch from gasoline to enjoy the environmental and performance benefits of bioethanol as a renewable and sustainable fuel.
More than 11,500 cars have been delivered since sales began in Sweden in July last year and the Saab 9-5 BioPower is clearly established as the country’s top selling environmentally-friendly vehicle, taking almost 30 per cent of sales in a fast-growing segment that already accounts for 13 per cent of the total car market.
For the first nine months of this year, sales total 7,700 units and, in response to such strong demand, Saab is raising its full-year Biopower sales forecast to 10,000 units, twice its original estimate. This includes a 700-strong order bank that has already built up for the nearly-announced 9-5 2.3t BioPower model, which commences delivery later this month (Oct).
The current 2.0t BioPower model accounts for over 80 per cent of all Swedish 9-5 sales and it is enjoying a similar level of popularity in neighboring Norway, where 300 cars have been ordered since July as a result of E85 fuel becoming more widely available.
But Saab 9-5 BioPower models are not just about being kinder to the environment, they also deliver more power and performance.
In combiningE85 with turbocharging, the Saab 9-5 2.0t BioPower engines produces 180 bhp and 280 Nm of torque, 20 per cent more maximum power and 16 per cent more torque than on gasoline. For the sedan, this translates to zero to 100 kph acceleration in 8.5 secs and 80-120 kph in fifth gear in 12.6 secs, compared to 9.8 and 14.9 secs with gasoline. The 2.3t BioPower engine delivers 210 bhp and 310 Nm of torque, 14 and 11 per cent more respectively, and zero to 100 kph in 7.9 secs and 80-120 kph in 11.0 secs v. 8.5 and 12.6 secs.
Saab BioPower drivers also appreciate its practical benefits because the BioPower engine can run, without adjustment from the driver, on any combination of E85 fuel and/or gasoline. That means the driver can always put gasoline in the tank at any time should E85 not be available.
Demand in Sweden is particularly strong in the corporate and fleet sector, as indicated by a recent order for a total of 400 cars from rental operator Avis. The adoption of Saab BioPower also helps many companies and public authorities meet their ISO 14001 environmental standards.
“Saab BioPower is a win/win offer because it delivers sportier performance as well as greater environmental care,” says Saab Sweden Marketing Director Patrik Riese. ” In Sweden, our customers can fully exploit these benefits because we have a growing E85 supply infrastructure backed by government incentives to use biofuels. It is the right product for the right time.”
