Confirmed – 9-1 *IS* go

I issued a caution with my coverage of the Dagens Industri story below as the content was fairly familiar from previous articles.

Feeling cautious I went straight to the source and emailed Saab Sweden to get confirmation of the story.

The reply:

Our official comment is:

Yes, we have in our plans a smaller car than the Saab 9-3, I.e. a compact car. For the moment no further comments.

It looks like a smaller Saab now has an official green light. Until further notice it’s going to be referred to here as a 9-1.

This is absolutely sensational news. The Dagens report scheduled the car for around 2009, which would indicate that it’s a ground-up job.

Go hard you bloody brilliant engineers and designers!!

  1. In the last Saab Club of Spain meeting, about one month ago, The CEO of a dealer, told me that in the last meeting with Saab, they receive the confirmation by Saab that the project of a compact car it as the green light.

    greetings

  2. swade, sorry to rain on your parade, but I was at a US dealer meeting last week……no 9-1 at least until…..2015. Unless the US leadership was not being forthright…..or just lying to their dealers….

  4. to go along with max, sub 9-3 model the earliest we were told was at least 2012 if and when it gets approval. remember there are always models “under development”. sadly that does not mean they are headed for production.

  5. it is just great!

I can not see that it should take that long. GM already have a good base in the astra, so they would not have to redevelop the powertrain… Hopefully within 2 years – so maybe we will see the concept in a year or so?

Considering the feedback from teh aero x, it would not surprise me…

  6. Yip-freakin’-ee!

Lessee here: My kids are 7 and 8 years of age, respectively. If the 9-1 comes out in three years, I can buy one, drive it for 4-5 years before I hand it down to my son! Brilliant!

Now, I have to make sure that it will fit someone that’s 6’5″ (that’s me) and 6’5″+ (that’s my son). Can you get me a read on that one, Swade, oh Swami of the Saabs?

  7. This is indeed very good news. Let’s hope they build something which appeals to all those who have or have had 99’s and 900’s. Saab obviously needs volume and tapping into a ready made market makes sense. Make mine an AWD Aero please and I’ll start saving up.

  8. Soo…. Any thougths, the new 9-1, will it be based on the new Delta platform, or the existing platform used for the Opel Astra? The new Astra, is it scheduled for 2009?

  9. Ooooh! Just in time! Looks like I’ll have the option of buying my father’s ’05 9-3 Arc SS off the lease in ’08 or a 9-1/9-2 in ’09. But a compact Saab hatch?!? I think even though I love his car I might have to go for this! Hell, he loves the ’99 9-3 5-door he bought for my brother after he got his so much (he LOVES the hatch capacity) he might opt for it himself!
