New 2008 Saab 9-3 Conv pic

Thanks to Marcus and TTELA there’s another rear-end pic to look at. It’s another convertible but this time in silver.

The last time we saw a sedan’s rear it was silver as well and whatever that black treatment is, it looked pretty thick on the back of the sedan and a bit too gothic.

As you can see on this convertible, it’s still there but looks thinner and tastier.

Not long now, I guess, until we see the final production version and we’ll know what’s really going on.

Someone mentioned to me last night that maybe the slowdown on the blog is partly to do with the exposure the 9-3 has received here. i.e. is it going to be an anticlimax when we finally see the car?

Not for me.

I’m still very much buzzing at the thought of seeing the new car and the possibility of getting in it and driving it as well. I can confirm now that I’ve requested a spot at the press event starting the day after the festival finishes and that that request has been accepted.

I’ll be driving the MY2008 Saab 9-3 on Monday 11th June and posting my thoughts and video from the experience that night. I think that’ll most likely make this site the first in the world to publish a review on the car.

  1. Those light pipes are really going to make the SAAB stand out at night. People are going to see them and say “there goes another one of those SAABs with the cool lights”. SAAB will stand out in a way they haven’t in quite some time. I welcome it! SAAB zigs while everyone else zags.

However, I must admit I haven’t noticed the light pipe on the taillights of the Cadillac I understand has them. Are they selling them with these taillights yet?

  2. oh love I love when people say they saw the MY08 and nothing else..

…for the love of G*D give us details!!!!

  3. So are light pipes confirmed then?

Robban, did the MY08 you saw have light pipes?

    Man, can’t wait for June 11th ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Another thing on that car, the lower bumper is all silver, I can also see it is a different design to the flat shape on the current version.

I wonder if they will keep the body colour on the Aero versions as well? Personally, I like the blacked section with the twin split pipes at the back, looks rather menacing :).

  5. FYI – the above link to TTELA also has two additional pictures for your viewing pleasure…a model without the chrome inserts in the lower dam intakes.

  6. That front end shot of the convertible looks FABULOUS!

I understand a metallic white paint is being introduced for 2008. If its anything like the metallic white I saw on a Ovlov C30 at the Vancouver care show in March Id seriously consider said colour!

  7. Joemama, dunno if it’s confirmed but that was the only car that iv’e seen in the Trollhรคttan/Vรคnersborg area with those lights on and not taped up I am surprised by how bright the light is comming from them though. June gonna be awesome, hope we get to see the 94-x to =)

  8. For some reason, this picture of the blacked-out lights looks better than that last picture in the car prison.

I don’t know exactly what the difference is, if any. Are the black areas actually narrower? Or is the car just having a good day?

  9. Kaz I dug out the brochure for my wifes M Sport 3 series which has the type of bumper you saw on the Aero with the blacked out panel.

On the BM the panel is part of the rear diffuser so if they have dropped the spoiler I would be pretty sure that is what the panel is. I would also guess that it will be in dark grey for the reason you gave above (it looks good).

  10. the Convertible is by far the best looking of the MY08 range. i really like the doorhandels they look more saab (sice they are saabs own). and the doorstripes sets it of just right.

  11. I have a feeling this new metallic white is the same white that is on the Aero X, i.e. bloody gorgeous!!

It must be this new Snow Silver colour. It also appeared on the Biopower Convertible concept. A similar colour also appeared on the Honda Civic Type R concept.

If it is this colour (You can tell with that first rear pic of the convertible, see the metallic type reflection/sparkle), then Saab will be the first to have put it into production, and it will be awesome! Other manufacturers have been teasing us with this colour for a while, but I’m glad we’re finally getting it here first ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. The fact that there are no lower chrome inserts at the front of that ‘vert also says to me that they probably won’t include those as standard on the non Aero models.

Right, methinks I will NOT be ordering Cerulean Blue next, Snow Silver has now surpassed it as the greatest colour of all time ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Sorry, I just keep spotting more things.

The front air dam on the convertible has an additional white strip across it. I wonder if this is another way to differentiate the Aero models from the non Aeros? Aero models do not have the white strip and the non Aeros do? Or perhaps it is another way to differentiate the ‘vert from the SS and SC?

  14. Right, yes, I think that strip across the air dam is definitely only on the non Aero models.

    Have a look here:

These are the renderings Swade posted a while back, and you can just make out the strip in the front air dam and no lower chrome inserts. This must be a non Aero render.

I was wondering how they were going to differentiate the Aero from the other models in the range, well, now we all know ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Really love the aggressive and distinctive look of the MY2008. I simply love that the new car has the clam shell bonnet. Finally, the prodigal son has come home. Can’t wait for the 11th June night for your write-up, Swade!

  16. WHen I was going to order a MY07, the only color would have been polar white.

I’m still a huge fan of white, but this front end shot has too much white in the front. It looks too plan and boring.

I hope they don’t make you get the Aero for ALL the bells and whistles.

I want my 2.0T for the mileage.

    ..front end looks cheap, IMO….

  17. Kaz – thanks, but I’m not as worried about the color as I am about the AMOUNT of color showing on the front end. If the snow silver looks bad I can always go with Polar White.

Hey, they might even offer the Aero in white this year!

I’ll just have to wait and see….

  18. Today I drove a Saab convertible for the first time…an 01 9-3SE. It was wondrous…I wish I wasn’t broke.

  19. We gave our ’04 0-3 Convertible back yesterday as the lease expired. Two cars in the house now, both sedans (9-3 Aero and S60R). Two small kids so we need four doors. But we loved that car…

When the Aero lease expires in a year we are getting a new convertible (kids do grow!). The new 9-3 convertible is a strong candidate and with both AWD and the 6 cylinder (not available in ’04) there are no excuses.

Kudos to SAAB for resisting the move to tin top. We don’t mind tin tops per se, but it does steal a lot of trunk space compared to a ragtop.
