SOC Update

The SOC is well underway and I’ll be getting some occasional coverage from 1985 Gripen. He wasn’t there for the first day and had to get up at 3am to fly east for the second day, so he was pretty tired when he sent this in:

I’m exhausted. I had to wake up at 3 a.m. to catch my 6 a.m. flight this morning and as you saw last night I was wired so I couldn’t sleep. I went to bed at 11:30 p.m.

So this is going to be my shortest e-mail ever.

I had the chance to ask Jan-Willem about diesel prospects in the States. He said that they evaluated the cost/benefit ratio a few years back and it wasn’t in favor of diesel, but with the market changing and fuel prices on the rise they’re re-evaluating the possibility of bringing the diesel cars to the States. Nothing concrete, just that they’re running the numbers again. The problem is that diesel engines cost more to manufacture than gasoline ones and they can’t really sell them for that much more money. Everyone wants to see a new feature or a new product offering, but they don’t want to pay any extra for it.

Now I only have about 26 more questions to ask him. I’ll get cracking tomorrow. Sleep now.

Take care.

And yes, that was Gripen’s shortest email ever.

He’ll have access to Saab’s people not only at the SOC, but also at the press event for the new 9-3 that he’ll be attending shortly thereafter.

Ryan at Saabhistory noted that Jay Spenchian stuck his head in on day 2 of the SOC, which was nice to see (click through that link for the pic if you like looking at blokes and cars)

I’ll be interested to hear from attendees at SOC if there’s a pressing need to alternate between east and west more often. I know I’d have a ball there as it’d be my first time, but with numbers at around 300 this year, it sounds like things are dwindling a little and perhaps the fact that it’s the same cars every year might have something to do with it.

Just thinking.

I’m planning on heading out there next year, but 2009 will see it held in Colorado (I think) and that’s supposed to be a ripper of a spot for it so I might have to try and back up for two in a row.

  1. LOL!! I have a shorter e-mail from Grippen in my inbox from about a month ago — but it was followed by three other e-mails sent within about a 3-minute span. So, I think that you actually win.

  2. Just back from the 12 hour drive, and I need to go to bed.

But the 2008 U.S. SOC location was announced at this year’s convention, for the weekend of August 24, 25, and 26, outside of Boston.
