Ah crap – Colin McRae died.

News reports are just starting to filter through that Colin McRae, the Scottish rally star and world champion from 1995 just died in a helicopter crash.

McRae was piloting the helo and he had his 5 year old son with him.

Ah crap. I feel sick. Why do extraordinarily talented people get in helicopters? First Stevie Ray Vaughn and now Colin McRae.

McRae was well known to any with a scant knowledge of rallying, or video games. Colin McRae Rally was one of the hottest video games out back in the day of the PS1.

RIP, Colin.

  1. They should also stay away from those little puddle jumper airplanes. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, JFK Jr….

  2. a crap, i took my first father and son trip to the WRC in 1995 in Walsh to see the rally. i remember sitting on the side of the mountain in the cold and mist covered valleys and waiting for the back fire of McReas car. lol i remember a stone that was flung from the back of the car hitting a camera man beside me. at home i still have the RAC stewards pass sticker from his car, sorry but i robbed it in service later that daya crap, i took my first father and son trip to the WRC in 1995 in Walsh to see the rally. i remember sitting on the side of the mountain in the cold and mist covered valleys and waiting for the back fire of McReas car. lol i remember a stone that was flung from the back of the car hitting a camera man beside me. at home i still have the RAC stewards pass sticker from his car, sorry but i robbed it in service later that day. i only sat beside him this time last year doing what he does best, GOING SIDEWAYS, Ill miss him

  3. Wow, what terrible news. I’m American, but even I’ve heard of Colin McRae, though admittedly due to the very popular video game. Unfortunately WRC coverage is non-existent in the U.S. or I’d watch it.

I can’t imagine how his wife and daughter must feel, losing both a husband/son and a father/brother.

I wasn’t aware Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash. I thought it was an airplane. You learn something new every day. I think that helicopters are very poupular amongst ex-race car drivers for some reason and just last night I was watching an older episode of Top Gear on BBC America and Jackie Stewart showed-up in a helicopter. The voice-over from Jeremy Clarkson said something to the effect of “like the stereotypical race car driver he showed up in a helicopter” or something to that regard.

  4. Will be missed immensely.
And CAM is that WALES you are talking about not Walsh??
I grew up in the Welsh mountain Valleys and spent every opportunity in the forest stages as a young kid watching them hurtle through the mist sideways.
I blame them rally drivers especially Walter Rohl
in his Audi Quatro for making me become a mechanic.
RIP Collin and sympathy for his family and friends.

  5. That is a shame. McRae was the man for a long time. Very sad that his son died too.

To me, the ultimate heroes in motorsport are:
    1) MotoGP riders
    2)WRC drivers
    3)F1 drivers.

These people take speed and skill to the limit with stuff-all margin for error & Colin was one of the best.

    Thoughts to the family.

  6. It’s a tragic loss of a great talent and even more devastating for the fact that his five year old son and six year old friend are believed to be amongst the dead.

Somehow, an already tragic event is made worse when young lives are involved.

  7. Just back from holiday and heard the news. A great talent lost. I can’t believe that both he and Richard Burns are both gone. I had never really heard of Subaru until he started with Prodrive and I hear he was in talks about coming back with Ford in ’08.

I did raise a smile at your piece Grip, I remember an article on the WRC trying to crack America and apparently younger kids thought that the WRC was based on the video game.

I am actually on a rally experience this weekend but my thougts will be with Colins family.

  8. Jon, the only thing I know of going-on with rally racing in the U.S. right now (besides the usual amateur SCCA rally circuit that’s been going for years to little fanfare) is that it’s now being performed as part of the X-Games (a sort of eXtreme sports Olympics). Motorcycle superstar Travis Pastrana has fallen in love with the sport and has started competing in rally events. Hopefully this will help raise the profile in the sport in the U.S.
