Saab 9-3: Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound

The 2008 Saab 9-3 is making it’s way into showrooms in various locations at the moment. One thing that you won’t see just yet, however, is the Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound system. For the US market at least, it won’t be available until later in the model year. I’m unsure about other markets.

For those audiophiles that are keen on the idea, here’s a look at what you’ll get. This is the briefing that the bloke who’ll sell it to you got.

  1. Maybe I am wrong and I’ll just have to listen but, this seems pretty much like the system in the 9-5. The big difference is that they switched to Bose (a mistake in my opinion).
I have yet to hear a Bose system that I thought measures up to Infinity/Harman Kardon systems. Guess I better keep my Basslink sub for the new 9-5 if they are going to stay with Bose.

  2. While I am sure this will sound fine for a car stereo, where I come from Bose is a four letter word. In audio circles they are considered a overpriced joke. If I get a new 9-3 to replace my “Dame Edna” 9-5 I will miss The H K setup I am sure.

  3. The “premium” 13 “speaker” stereo in my 2004 9-3 Aero was a joke. I quoted the “speaker” because they were of such poor construction (as are most car speakers) as to be worthless to anyone who cares about decent sound. I’m glad to see that SAAB is moving to a better sound system even if it’s not the best in the world.

  4. It may give you “surround sound” out of 2 channels, but will it actually process DVD-A or DD5.1? I bet not. I bet it’s just some kind of signal processing fake “surround sound.” I’m sure it just tries to make your stereo cd’s sound like true surround sound.

The factory stereo in my Acura TL is far from great, but it’s one of the best factory-installed stereos I’ve ever heard. This will probably be a step up for Saab, as I’ve heard the stereo in the current 9-3’s, and a string attached to a paper cup would be a step-up.

  5. Sounds nice, but they missed the important thing! Complete iPod integration not just over die AUX jack! I don’t understand why they didn’t make it, Audi, BMW and all the others (even Hyundai) are capable. Hoping for MY09
