(I think) the 9-4x is coming to Detroit – and so am I!!!

It’s been written in a few publications recently that the all-new Saab 9-4x SUV will be making it’s first public appearance at the NAIAS in Detroit, in January 2008.

I know that Saab will definitely have something new to show there, because they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse – to come over to Detroit in January and cover it!!

Yes, it looks like I’ll be boarding a plane again in the pursuit of Saabiness.

Obviously I’m pretty excited, both about the coming vehicle and the possibility of visiting Detroit and seeing the show (added bonus – the Pistons are playing the Raptors while I’m there, too – woohoo!). It’ll be a whirlwind trip. I’m hoping to arrive a few days before the show so that I can acclimatise and meet a few of the Saab officials from both the US and Europe.

Exciting times!!

Naturally I’d like to thank the guys at Saab for extending me this invitation, and I’m really looking forward – once again – to providing you all with the best coverage I can with audio, video, stills and text. Plenty of text.

So.

I guess it’s time to really start looking into the 9-4x.

Unfortunately I don’t think I have any spies in Mexico, but let’s see what the future brings……

  1. Well, if the new 9-4x *and* Swade are going to be at NAIAS, I might have to go as well.

Although they’ll never let me in on the designated press days.

  2. That is pretty cool.

I have not been up to the Detroit show in a few years but I may have to drive up there for this one…

Just pack some warm clothes Swade – motor city is a cold place to be in January.

  3. I was kinda wondering if it was worth putting together a dinner occasion, but I’m going to be there for a few days before the show, not after (when it’s open to the public). It’d be great to catch up with people in person.

  4. Well, let’s do a TS podcast roundtable before the show. Does that count as enough automotive journalism to get me a press pass?

I looked at this last year, the requirements to get a press pass struck me as fairly tough.

  5. Congrats, Swade. Was this courtesy of Saab USA? While you’re there you can maybe pester them for a position with the company! 😉

If you get a chance you might want to take a few hours to tour the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

Definitely try to get an invite for a tour of the Heritage Collection and CAS if you can as well. I mean, you’re traveling quite a distance, might as well try to get as much in as you can!

  6. I’m sure it had everything to do with the wonderful coverage of the Sydney motor show…. so where’s the ticket for your photographer!!!!! Boooooooooo!!!!

  7. Congratulations, Swade!
Tonight I spent another hour at my local Saab dealer! The 2008s are in!
I drooled over a Pepper Green, a Snow Silver and am really trying to make it work! If it were not for Trollhattansaab I’d NOT be considering a purchase of Saab! You are a Saab Ambassador Extraordinaire! I’m pretty excited! 🙂
(I know I’m not supposed to end each sentence with an exclamation mark, but…Saab may soon owe another sale to you!!!)

  8. Will the Aero-X ladies be there ? 😀

Congrats Swade, movin’ up in the Saab world huh ? Was this by Saab USA or Saab Global ?

Any chance of a flight layover or connection in Vancouver ?

    Ken

  9. Congratulations Swade! Any hint whether the (available for purchase) XWD 9-3s will share the spotlight at the show too?

P.S.: If GM is offering tckets to pro sports events I’d recommend catching a Red Wings game – their current roster has six players from Sweden 🙂

  10. Congratulations, Swade!

I´m really, really happy for you and for all of us that Saab seems to appreciate what you´re doing. It´s good to know that we´ll get quick view from the show. And especially, that it´s you who will be there, not just another motor journalist!
I´m really excited too! I guess they really have something special to show. Like 9-4X or the like.

This is just awesome! TS rocks!

  11. Hello Saab Press Office Trollhattan!

Thank God you have seen the light and sent Swade an motor show invite !

    He is official now then…

So Swade is a Saab Ambassador- or about to become one -officially – he has been one – de facto – for ages.

Well done Swade- you deserve it, just don’t quaff too much booze in Business Class!

    Oh for the high life…

Thanks Saab – everyone who considers themselves part of Swade’s support family are really pleased for him

    Yours Saaboidly

Lance Cole – you know the one that writes all those articles on Saabs!

  12. Cool I love that the recognize your work with the web-site!

But don’t get to much in under the corporate wings…

We need you as a spoke person with a tourch up their arse…

  13. Thanks all for your support and well-wishes. Indeed, the invitation did come through Trollhattan, a place I was only able to visit because of the support you guys gave me. So I’ll be working my butt off over there to bring everything to the site in the best and quickest possible way.

  14. And we know you will, I remember you working in Trollhattan even when we were eating pizza and drinking in the bar. 🙂 great times 🙂

    Great times, indeed – SW

  15. Congrats Swade, Let’s hope they offer you a job. THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO DO SO. New and better products, new p.r. firm and the need to spred the proper word about Saab.
You never know, from time to time, some dreams come true. LETS HOPE.

  16. By then the Panasonic World Solar Challenge (held in Australia) will be finished ?
So i suspect saab will be at naias with a spectacular BACK TO JETS – theme, and not only as a dull slogan …
Surely mr Swade knows all about it already, but as he joined GM/saab-forces M. Lutz made him to keep his mouth shut.
As all of you are keen to know what will be presented, and Mr. Swade isn’t allow to tell us, i tried to figure it out.
So heres is the car/jet saab will be introducing for the road:

  17. You know more realistically, Isn’t January when the XWD is actually supposed to go public? It may be that he is being invited for the US debut of it. Swade did such an excellent review of the XWD in Trollhattan, they may consider him an ambassador!

  19. Congrats Swade. I’m jealous.

I hope its the 9-4x as my sister is looking for a CUV in the next year and half and I want to bring her to the Saab family. Hopefully it can meet her needs.

  20. Swade, Let’s do the dinner thing during general show admissions with the locals.
I will commit to the date.
    Enjoy! Brian Mills

  21. Awesome Swade, well happy for you :).

I look forward to your reports :).

Detroit is very cold in Jan, make sure you pack some woolies. Also, stick to the main routes whenever you can, Detroit has some good areas, but also some rather dangerous ones. Hope they give you a Turbo X to tootle around in :).

  22. Oh God yes, pack warm. Detroit is crazy cold. And pack a Glock, too, Detroit is dangerous, second most dangerous city in the US. Baltimore is 12th, but we ARE the gonorrhea (and possibly heroin addiction) capital of the country. Come visit us sometime! :p

I so want to go to this show. I will if I can get the money together.

  23. I’m probably naive about this, but I’ve never really felt threatened in Detroit. Baltimore, Camden, NJ and Gary/Hammond, Indiana, yes. Detroit, no. Probably just haven’t been to the wrong parts of town; I don’t go often.

On the plus side, Detroit + winter = Hockeytown. Best team for the past 20 years or so, it seems. I dislike the Wings; they are the division rival to the Preditors.

GM Heritage Museum. There’s something for everyone.

And, by that time, you will probably be able to buy Chrysler for $20 and a half-eaten bag of Doritos. We can license the Saab designs, convert all of the Chrysler plants to make nothing but Saabs. Bwahhhahhahhahhha!!

  24. Deeeeeeeetroiiiiiiiiiiiit Baaaaaaaasketbaaaaaall!!!!! Swade, I know you wanna see Chauncey drain those three’s!!
