2008 Saab 9-3 road test at Driving.ca

They call it driving.ca in the title image but the web address is autos.canada.com and the article appeared in a paper called the Times. This web syndication business is enough to make your head spin!

But that’s no reason to ignore this road test of the 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero. I’d take a guess and say that it’s been written by someone new to Saabs, and when this happens the writeup is usually written with other ‘Noobies’ in mind. Sometimes it’s best to get back to basics and experience that initial appreciation all over again:

Saab’s current advertising tagline is “Born from Jets,” a reference to its aeronautical past, which includes the design and manufacture of fighter jets.

But once the turbocharger kicks in on the refreshed 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero, drivers might agree there is something behind the marketing slogan…..

….The turbo is mated to a 2.8-litre V-6 that produces 255 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and while that’s not enough to get airborne, it is enough to attract the attention of BMW and Audi trying to keep up with the low-flying Swede.

High praise indeed, but this really is a great engine (it won a Ward’s award in it’s first year with Saab, remember) and the 2008 improvements have really made the 9-3 an even better drive.

I won’t reproduce any more of the review here, except for this photo, which I think’s a great one of the interior.

  1. Hey Swade. You’re right..the domain redirection these days can be mind-boggling.

To clarify: Canwest Media in Canada owns the canada.com domain. Canwest’s corporate paperbag includes nearly every major daily newspaper in Canada – including that of the Times Colonist in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.

The driving.ca domain is just another one Canwest scooped so as to make it easier to remember for folks to remember.

    Clear as mud? 😉

    Cheers,
    Richard

  2. First time I have heard someone complain about the seats in a recent Saab. The seats in my 9-5 Aero are fantastic, and I don’t remember the 9-3 being significantly different.

  3. If you go through their photos, it appears they were all taken on black&white film, except maybe one. Sure doesn’t help make the car look good.

  4. nice review.
chalk another one up for ‘once you test drive a Saab, chances are you’re sold’.
makes me need to try that Aero out to see if it makes me (how did that go last week??) ‘… to have their pulse racing like they’ve just jumped out of an aeroplane, their bodies need to be so pumped full of adrenaline that they can’t even hold a glass of water to calm their nerves afterward.
Anyone who pushes that button needs to become so overwhelmed with emotion that it will eat them up if they don’t tell someone else about it.’…or something like that.
    🙂

  5. I don’t like the 06 and newer interior. I don’t particularly like the new nose, but can deal with it. The tail-light treatment is fine; different colors make a great deal of difference.. but all in all…

I like my 6 speed 03 ARC better than the new ones. Guess I’ll be keeping a sharp eye out for another ‘old’ one in the future. /shrug.

  6. I own a 04′ 9-3 linear blk with added spoiler and third party 17″ chrome wheels. I love my car except for the cheap plastic on the interior. I can say Saab took a step backwards after that by cheezy exterior styling, removing the “instrument panel and hud” and not upgrading the stereo system. I guess I will look elsewhere.
