Holy crap!! Saab Turbo X in Netherlands costs heaps.

Using today’s exchange rate, US$42,510 converts to €28,804.73.

Don’t let me hear anyone in the US complain about the high price of the Saab Turbo X again….

Saab Netherlands have just issued a press release on the new high performance Saab and they’re pleased to announce that the first orders for the car have already been taken.

A number of orders have been placed here in Australia too, and they were placed prior to the price being known. I assume that would be the case in the Netherlands, too.

Prospective Dutch owners would therefore be interested to know that the press release also includes the price, which is provisonally set at €60,530 for the Sport Sedan and €62,330 for the SportCombi.

  1. I assume that any European price normally includes VAT (in amounts that can add around 20% to the base. US (lower sales taxes, depending on the state and sometimes city) and Canadian (between 5 and 14% depending on the province plus $100 for A/C) prices are before taxes. There is still a gap whichever is compared to US prices, but it is considerably reduced. I’m not justifying the price tags, just noting that a chunk of it goes to the government (hopefully for the public good). When citing Euro prices, perhaps it would be worth the effort to quote or estimate the before-tax list price.

  2. For comparison, the “regular” 2008 9-3 Aero 2.8 sedan lists for €51,395 including all taxes. The price before taxes is €32,016. There is a 19% sales tax and another car tax of 45.2% plus another few additional charges/deductions based on the fuel type and energy label.

    Based on those tax percentages, the before-tax price of the Turbo-X comes to around €37,000 which is still much higher compared to the USA. Saab is either making a lot more money on the European sales or taking a hit on US sales.

  3. It almost seems like at those prices it’d be cheaper to buy a Turbo-X in the U.S. and have it shipped over to The Netherlands. Though I’m sure doing such a thing would incur all kinds of penalties as to perhaps wash-out any kind of benefit.

    I don’t think those in the U.S. are “complaining” about the price of the Turbo-X except to point-out that the price seems to be a bit high compared to what you can get from the competition for the same money. I’m sure a lot of it is the exclusivity of the special edition.

    I’m not a huge fan of the current-gen 9³, but I have to admit that I’d be pretty proud to own one of only 600 copies in the country. On the flip-side I’d always be left wondering if the price difference between the Turbo-X and a black 9³ Aero XWD w/eLSD was worth it.

    In The Netherlands the Turbo-X is even more exclusive.

  4. the FX is a killer with the eurozone products now a days. the dealers here in Moscow say that GM has given a quote of 30 Turbo Xs for Russia. the price tag is not public yet, but with the cost of the Aero being $46.500 (Electric heated seats {leather/textile} with memory, 17 rims and Bi-Xenon are standard), the Turbo X will most probably be priced somewhere around $58-60k. we have import customs tax of 25% for new cars and a VAT of 18% so given the US price and adding up the tax also gives this amount. Dealers will start taking orders only in Feb though. just for comparison: BMW 325iA quite nicely packed costs around $55 as well.

  5. hehe, that’s about 4,000Euros less than a linear here in malta, thanks to our lovely government who imposes 75% registration tax on vehicles and a further 18% VAT on the total (which is discriminatory according to the european union)

    I don’t know how much the Aero X is, but the 9-3 Aero 2.8 sedan is €85721 (that’s US$126000).

    But hey, they have got oil. 🙂

    It surely has to do with the BPM in the Netherlands.

    From dutch-price list today:
    Saab 9-3 Sport Estate
    1.9 TTiD Aero 132 (180) 6-hand
    € 29.356,66 catalogue price excl. VAT
    € 34.934,- catalogus price including VAT
    € 12.955,- BPM
    € 47.890,- consumer price

    Same car in Belgium:
    Aero 1.9 TTiD 180 M6
    € 29 793,39 excl. VAT
    € 36 050,- incl. 21% VAT
    so 180 hhp is around 135 kW
    the consumer has to pay € 2.478,- of BIV up on the price inluding VAT, which makes a total of
    € 38.528,-
    Wich is indeed a lower end price.

    (There might be some differences in the standard or optional packs, which influences the prices as well – but i didn’t check)

    But you’ll have to compare the NL-saab for € 47.890,- with the BE-saab for € 38.528,- and not with € 36 050,-.
    But the gap is huge: € 9.362,-

    And for some reasons BPM is always mentioned in the Netherlands and the BIV in Belgium the consumer has to make the sum by itself.

    The situation even differs more if you compare it with other (european) countries. European Union is still far away in the real world.
    Recently in Germany VAT was raised, I suppose this was a step towards a more homogenuos market in Europe. But it needs more time and it’ s very complex to change all the different registration taxes, VAT’s and other ‘discriminatory’ actions of the different governments. You can count on it that consumer prices will only rise by all political decisions towards are more equal market in the EU.

  8. But Dutch government is doing something with this BPM money: far better Dutch road surfaces if you compare to Belgian ones and a hell of a lot more Gatso’s……

  9. The reason there are more Gatsos in The Netherlands is simple, the speed camera (Gatso) was invented by a Dutchman- Maurice Gatsonides – who came to live in the UK- bless him…

  10. After our car taxing changes 1.1.2008, a 9-3 Turbo X SportCombi 2.8TS V6 A6 costs 68950€. How does that sound? Competitive? BMW 330 xiA Touring costs 61700€.

    Main reason for such pricing is very high CO2 figures of Saab 2.8 engine 🙁

  11. Oh dear, and we thought we got the rough end of the stick in OZ. It’s all relative as depending in which market you are in and how much room there is for discounting and barganing.
