Press Release: Saab Automobile To Improve Efficiency As Part Of Business Plan Review

Trollhättan, Sweden: Swedish Automobile N.V. (Swan) announces that Saab Automobile AB (Saab Automobile) has launched an efficiency improvement initiative as part of a broader review of the company’s business plan for 2012 and beyond, aiming at creating a more flexible and more competitive cost structure for the company. This initiative also reflects the effects of the prolonged production stoppage since April of this year and is an important element of the voluntary reorganization plan that will be presented at a forthcoming creditors meeting.

During the coming weeks, Saab Automobile will identify areas throughout the whole organization where efficiencies can be gained. The initiative will focus on both fixed and variable costs and aims to create a lower and more flexible cost structure within Saab Automobile by eliminating duplication of work, streamlining processes, shortening lead times, improving coordination between departments and simplifying the organizational structure. As a result of this initiative headcount reductions cannot be ruled out. All improvements should be implemented before year-end in order for Saab Automobile to have a new, competitive cost structure for the 2012 financial year.

  1. GRIFFIN UP!

Keep the mojo going – Saab has a LOT more dedicated fans than one would believe after the years of GM’s abuse. Let’s see that pretty new 93 now…

  2. There must be tons of double work being done because of the splitting of original saab into Tools, Powertrain etc that was neccessary for the EIB loan. Getting rid of EIB and putting back all the sections of Saab under the same roof seems as a good start in this restruction.

  3. This will be your last chance to do this. Cut hard, cut deep and show the Chinese that there can be a profitable future for manufacturing in Sweden – or they will lose respect and the inevitable will follow.

  4. +1 jond93x. This is Saab’s last shot – they’ve GOT to trim the fat wherever possible and make that factory/research center in Trollhatten as lean as possible. It’s either that, or get picked up for pennies on the dollar by various corporations in the East.

  5. Wishing Saab all the best and hoping it is not too late.

Please get those 9-5 SC units to the United States.  Your dealers need something new and different (they have plenty of 9-3 and 9-5 sedans in stock that even thousands in rebates seem not to have an effect on) besides the 9-4x.

The new 9-3 will make or break Saab.  It had better be amazing and get here quickly.

And please – have some kind of marketing plan lined up with warranty guarantees.  You are not going to sell many cars here (USA) if you don’t.  Consumers are not going to line up with 40 or 50 thousand dollars without confidence in the lifespan of the vehicle manufacturer.

  6. This has to be done in order to get Saab profitable again as soon as possible. People reductions are always sad but in this financial situation really an only way to go forward to save jobs, get profitable and make great cars also in the future.

  7. As part of your review of the business plan, you’ve got to include aggressive advertising here in the US.  There are plenty of cars in stock but only a few people are aware that Saab exists.  I believe that a lack of advertising has led to poor sales.  You’ve got to make people want to buy the cars and advertising only in some markets and only in newspapers is not going to cut it.  Saab must get people to see the cars on TV and show the consumer why he/she should choose a Saab over the competitors.

  8.  Swade and Saab Management, There is little doubt Saab enthusiasts feel as drained from watching near or last of an auto cat’s 9 lives.  You, Swade, have this social media outlet to extend directly to Saab the global interest visible during the “Save Saab” GM Wind-Down period.  Though it was then impressive for passion, interest, and hope – only products of merit to the traditional 1-2% market resulting in SALES will actually Save Saab.  If you don’t mind, here is an unsolicited idea that might lead to a needed lift for Saab at this time.  Not by just efficiency CUTS, but no/low cost ADDITONS:  Why not combine the two forces that need each other.  If a buyer purchases a new Saab, connect them with an owner of a vintage Saab (registered for the program) to host the new buyer for 1-3 days to share a drive or road trip, local fun and Saab stories – Post accounts to a web site – add a personal touch to Saab’s legacy fitting to its enthusiast base.   Such an effort provides no/low cost advertisement and stories provide a marketing theme as a SAAB SOCIAL.  This may provide a bridge of appreciation between existing Saab owners hoping to save the marque and new buyers that actually do. Saab enthusiast,02 9-5 Aero, 90 SPG, 88 900T

      1. We’re living in transition times, so unhook and let the flow do it’s work. The world is made of poetry, art, beauty and love… and energy. I’m convinced all the energy to keep Saab alive could contribute to improve the world rather than contributing to something we don’t really need.
