11/11/11 – the Saab 9-1 that wasn't

Saab have certainly had a decent run with concept cars over the years. I’d have to go back and do the math, but the number of new Saab concepts over the last 10 years or so, starting with the original Saab 9x, actually outnumbers the number of new Saab road-going vehicles over several decades. The concept-to-new-car ratio would be a nice one to address, but that’s a post for another time.

One of those Saab concepts was the Saab 9-X BioHybrid from 2008.

The 9-X BioHybrid was first shown at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, where it actually followed in the footsteps of the Saab Aero-X two years earlier by winning the award for the best vehicle at the show.

The 9-X BioHybrid is a vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like. It is designed to reflect the priorities of youthful customers who seek progressive looks, responsible performance and high-tech communications, all in a sporty, fun-to-drive package.

I distinctly remember Bob Lutz saying that if Saab were to build this car, it would be called the 9-1. We were all very excited to see the car, but it was the “IF” in Lutz’s statement that had the enthusiast community feeling a little deflated. Saab needed a small car and we all thought this could be it. Of course, as things turned out, Saab was up for sale less than 12 months after this concept was released. I guess Lutz knew that was possible when the car was shown, hence there was no commitment made.

So…. this is the car that could have been a Saab 9-1 if things had worked out differently. The only other Saab with a 1 in the model number was an airplane, so it seems appropriate to mark the 11/11/11 with a tip of our collective hat to this beautiful concept car.

This concept was joined later in the year by a concept called the Saab 9-X Air, a convertible version of the vehicle that looked absolutely amazing with the top down (though not so good with the top up). The Saab 9-X Air name was later dropped in favour of the name Saab 9-X Convertible.

Saab 9-X BioHybrid:
Boosting Efficiency in Compact Design and Performance

The Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept is a vivid vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like. It is designed to reflect the priorities of youthful customers who seek progressive looks, responsible performance and high-tech communications, all in a sporty, fun-to-drive package.

Exploring design themes from Saab’s award-winning Aero X and earlier 9X concepts, the 9-X BioHybrid also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200 hp (147 kW), 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine backed by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system. Projected combined cycle CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km on E85 fuel are testimony to the promise of this package.

The interior showcases an entirely new expression of Saab’s driver-focused cockpit design, together with innovative, seamless connectivity for personal nomadic devices and a rear cargo deck with a ‘low friction’ loading system.

“This car is all about efficiency in design and performance,” says Anthony Lo, Director of Advanced Design at General Motors Europe, who led the 9-X BioHybrid design team in co-operation with the Saab Brand Center in Sweden.

With its ‘turbine’ wheels placed at all four corners, minimal bodywork overhangs and an extended roof line, the proportions of the three-door Saab 9-X BioHybrid bring a dynamic, new dimension to conventional compact ‘hatchback’ looks.

The smooth ‘fuselage’ bodywork, now without any visible handles or door mirrors, the bold ‘wraparound’ window graphic and deep front grille are all themes inspired by the Aero X coupé concept shown at Geneva two years ago.

The car’s distinctive ‘shooting brake’ silhouette and rear functionality are developed from the 9X multi-role concept shown at Frankfurt in 2001. “You could say we designed this car from back to front, “says Lo. “The shape of the 9X is right for a car of this size, and the longer roof line helps the aerodynamics as well as providing more rear headroom and interior space.”

Echoing Saab’s roots in aircraft design, the 9-X BioHybrid also explores the potential for using active aerodynamics to reduce drag – and fuel consumption – at cruising speeds. Above 70 kph (43 mph), the upper and lower bodywork is reshaped as the roof spoiler automatically extends to further lengthen the roof line and an underbody diffuser is deployed from the bottom of the rear bumper.

The four-seater cabin introduces an entirely new execution of Saab’s driver-focused cockpit design. The central, floor-mounted console, with its angled controls and displays, is now eliminated. Instead, the driver- focused layout incorporates a main instrument panel that sweeps out from the top of the door moulding, arching across the driver. The embedded 3-D graphics appear to be ‘frozen’ in ice, continuing a Scandinavian design theme first seen in the Aero X.

Reflecting the needs of youthful customers, who expect easy access to multi-media both inside and outside the car, Saab has co-operated with Sony Ericsson in providing seamless in-car connectivity for a range of nomadic devices. The result is a wireless interface for streaming data, entertainment and satellite navigation functions for display and use. The interface also allows the simultaneous use of multiple devices when passengers are in the car.

At the rear, the cargo deck features an electrically-powered slide-out floor, which is activated when the bottom half of the split tailgate drops down The floor, and the back of the folding rear seats, is covered by ‘high friction’ rubber carpeting, which ‘grips’ items and holds them securely in place. For easy loading and unloading, aluminum bars automatically rise up and down as the tailgate is opened and closed.

The treatment of light is an important part of Scandinavian design and this is evident in the use of variable, white ambient lighting inside the cabin. The level of suffused illumination can be changed in intensity from bright, cold to warm and soft. It’s a personalized feature that could even be programmed, for example, to reflect the pattern of the changing seasons

“This car shows how our concept work can be carried forward into a compact format,” adds Anthony Lo. “It has a number of features which we will be developing further, such as the new driver-focused design theme, the importance of clean, uncluttered surfaces and the easy, seamless connectivity inside the car.”

  1. I have a love for this one. I was fortunate enough to have seen and touched this in Arizona during a Saab Technician’s Convention. Still have pictures in my tool box, and bring them out from time to time to show people. This would be a great seller. So Sharp.

      1. +++1 SAAB should build this amazing Car. I can not understand SAAB managers they take time and give so much money to design amazing prototypes and they would never on the market ! It is really stupid waste to loose so much energies.

  2. I’m not a big fan, so I’m rather glad this never became the 9-1. It looks like the Scion designer redesigned the VW Golf with ‘futuristic’ theme. Besides, it sounds like it would have been a false start anyway.

    I’m much more excited to see what Jason Castriota can do.

    Beautiful lines and proportions. Impressing that the design-team have  been able to make a small utility-car so beautiful, clean and expressive!

  5. The 9-X Air is such a beautiful design. It would be great if they build a car based on that one. One question that remains unanswered, what happened to that infamous roof opening mechanism? Did Saab managed to patent it? What it looks like? Will it ever see the light of day?
    Ok, ok, that is more than one question, but never the less, I hope that SAAB will live another day and that it would be given a chance to tell us that tale and many more. 😉

  6. They should have made this one instead of the 9-4x. I think this one would have sold better. Especially since GM didn’t care to develop a Diesel alternative in the 9-4. A diesel 9-4 would have made it more attractive to the European market.. *sigh*

  8. The darker clay model in the background of Image 5 is truly awesome. Its wheels are better suited to the 9-X than the turbines. What if in 2013 Saab only offered this “entry level” model, the current 9-5, and an Aero X type flagship? Let GM keep the 9-4x … skip the NG 9-3 … and have a three model lineup with three very different models.

  9. It fits in very well with the current line-up (9-4X and 9-5).  Many of the same styling details but still different enough to have its own look.  The blacked-out a-pillars are still my favorite.

    What is Anthony Lo doing these days?  Is he still with GM?

  10. I was never a big fan of the 9-X BH although the Air version looked okay.  It’s actually rather bigger than it looks and I don’t think it would’ve scaled well to create a 9-1. It’s also not terribly original, looking far to much like the Skoda Joyster concept (from the previous year) for it’s own good. Frankly I’ve always preferred the original 9X or the 9-3X Crossover Coupe as concepts.

  11. I did read the news today: that SWAN said at the general meeting that a bankruptcy can be possible for Saab 🙁 I don’t like what i read recently… I don’t know how to think anymore

    1. They were just being factual.  If the deal cannot be worked out for Pang Da and Youngman to invest in Saab that will get GM approval (and then approval from the other groups that must do so), then Saab may run out of time and money to complete the reconstruction and would have to move on to bankruptcy. 

      That is why it is so important that all involved keep working/negotiation, and quickly, to find a suitable solution.

I just wish Saab would focus on the 9-3 and 9-5 (cars that people are actually buying) and making them globally available rather than new cars that Saab has neither a track record for 9-1, 9-7 and 9-4X come to mind, nor is guaranteed a market for the relatively unknown brand. No wonder they are struggling financially. Developing cars from scratch is extraordinarily expensive… developing cars that already exist in their bouquet is relatively inexpensive and still have great potential. They can start taking on BMW when they have BMW money.

    1. Saab is a sport saloon brand. All their pacy saloons have been replaced by sluggish (by comparison) luxury cars and SUVs. This isn’t the Saab Legacy. I’m very happy with my Viggen and as my second Saab I’m a huge fanatic but the brand is losing it’s original image. I don’t see a 900 in the ranks of any of the cars currently on offer. If I wanted an alternative to BMW, I’d buy an Audi. With a Saab I want something else entirely. Something more exclusive but not in the traditional sense of the word.
