For sale – the cars at the Saab Museum

UPDATE: Now complete, with over 200 photos and GoogleTrans text into English for the 123 vehicles from the Saab Museum that are up for sale by public tender at the end of this week.

This is a really sad post to have to write. The cars from the Saab Museum are now up for sale by public tender and I guess this process is one of the first indicators we’ll get as to a potential new owner’s intentions for the brand. A corporate buyer looking to build on Saab’s existing brand attributes and presence should, at the very least, preserve the core of the museum collection for that purpose.

The cars have been documented (you can get your own copy here in PDF form) and offers to purchase any of the vehicles are to be submitted by Friday.

What a sad, sad occurrence for a Saab fan.

I’ve reproduced the contents of that PDF and translated the basics into English (via Google, hence they won’t always make sense). The bankruptcy administrators have taken photos of each car, mostly in poor light, and these are provided as well. The administrators have used their own coding system for documenting the vehicles, comprising the letters VM and a three digit number – and no, I don’t think that’s a tribute to Victor Muller :-)

I’m actually sick to my stomach as I read this! All of Saab history on the block…even UrSaab. This is devastating.

  2. eggsngrits says:

My sadness knows no bounds. Ursaab for sale. Such a tragedy.

  3. Lonnie says:

I usually refrain from leaving comments anywhere on the internet unless I have something of value to add or can at least add humor.

But for just this once I’m going to break my rule and just say that this is simply awful.

  4. Golfhunter says:

The nest with all those unique cars will be destroyed . Jay Leno should react .
Or the king of Sweden !
    It’s unbelievable !
    And so sad

  5. Heather says:

Awful to see these cars for sale. Hope they go to fans, tho I would prefer they stay right where they are. Where’s a generous benefactor when you need one?

  6. Alexander says:

    @Heather:
There’s no doubt that they will go to fans, i don’t think anyone else know they’re for sale :) I hope they’ll be looked after good, and that the Ursaab ends up in a proper museum to witness of the greatness of the times that have passed!

  7. Kroum says:

This is such a tragedy. :( It’s beyond me that they could not preserve at least Saab’s memory intact.

  8. jeff ridabock says:

This is just so so wrong. If I were in the Swedish govt. I would be demanding action to save the museum. not the company but the history! A tragic end to a fantastic automobile manufacturer. The car is dead, LONG LIVE SAAB!

  9. ev2 says:

I feel the the same as anyone who commented , so sad and empty . To top it off I could buy something and be a caretaker of some of the cars , The bank has said I have the money if I’d like but it’s happened so fast and I’m not prepaired to get it done in the time allowed . Being in the U.S. shipping , bidding by phone or travel to Sweden . The same happened to the U.S. cars it was like only a few were involved , and done before I even knew =( . it’s this friday ? the 20th of Jan. ? *sigh* and what doesnt sell what happens to that ? The bin for scrap ? SAAB has made my living for a long time , and I feel helpless .

  10. Curvin O'Rielly says:

The “woulda, coulda, shoulda” saga of Saab over the past few years can’t end this way, can it? Surely there’s a deep-poketed Saabista somewhere who’ll sweep in and rescue the entire collection of Saabs. They should be kept intact and available for long-term preservation in a proper museum in Trollhatten.

  11. Montahue says:

What ever the outcome of this, am I to dramatic when i say this feels like someone is pissing on the grave? Goddammit this crap shouldn’t even be legal. Having a complete historical museum sold out in pieces should just not be a possibility in any state or country.

  12. Fryderyk says:

This is hopeless, I’m speechless. They should keep it all together.

  13. turbin says:

Can’t add anything, agree with all the above. Makes me more sick than the BLS listed above.

  14. Chip Lamb says:

It would seem that this is just an attempt by the trustees to help set value to Innovatum’s bid for the entire museum. It is HIGHLY unlikely that the collection will be broken up. News continues to support this assertion. Over and out.

    • Swade says:

Hey Chip, quite possibly the case.

But aside from the sale (or non-sale to individuals), I was keen to document what is the first public vehicular stocktake from the museum. There was some stuff in there that even I didn’t know about. I’m also curious about a few of the items that aren’t included – such as the cutaway vehicles and, of course, the PhoeniX concept.

      • Montahue says:

Lets hope the PhoeniX concept is not in there for good reasons.
But i guess that is what you meant.

    • eggsngrits says:

Comforting to hear. It also puts to rest any thoughts I have of buying one of these…. could you imagine getting a 900 Aero with fewer than 100 miles on it or a 99 Turbo that’s been pampered its whole life? These are singular vehicles.

    • Scott Murphy says:

Thanks Chip/Swade, if these were to be offered-up individually (and to individuals), any idea with whom any would-be collectors might reach out to, not seeing any contact info here. Thanks, SMM

  15. 74Stingray says:

yep, very sad and depressing. I wish I could have made the trip there to see them all in the glory that was… SAAB.

  16. jimmy says:

Where are the cut-away cars? How about all the display engines etc?
I would love to have the cut-away 93, I could stare at that car for hours and marvel at the level of detail to produce such a work of art.
Let’s all hope this collection remains intact in Trollhattan!

  17. 100%Saab says:

The administrators could get a job with GM after this is all over. Businessmen all.

    Just a thought.

  18. Darryl says:

    Swade,

I wish I had whats needed to own many of them #101 & 102 I like alot. Always wanted a pre 67′ US 95 and some of the prototypes too. Thanks for taking the time to post. Its really good stuff. Unfortunately, part way down the list, I can see where Saab “changed”…

    Darryl

  19. Samuel Leung says:

So very sad. But I can at least say I’ve seen most of the cars in the museum now, so thanks Steve.
I swear a few of those ’80 model 900’s have the ’91-’92 front end.. slanted headlights.
Oh and I love the Saab 9000 CS Limo – VM418.. but I probably like it more because it’s similar to my ’91 CD.

  20. saabasaurus says:

I am just as sick after reading this.. I have dreamt about the AeroX ever since it was released in 2006.. and now, I could have the opportunity to buy the car of my dreams.. and I am just so sad.. I can’t even imagine. I just wish there was a way to keep them all together.

  21. Jamie says:

Just a tragedy, that I hope has a happy ending. It was an absolute bittersweet time to scroll through the pictures.

Thanks for all your hard work Swade!

  22. Taylor Hitchcock says:

If these beautiful cars are up for sale, where can I bid or purchase them? And can I get some idea on price?! Really interested on all the 9000’s and any Viggens!

  23. Oh God, the way they have “documented” the bid items is simply awful. No wonder so many people raise reservations about the way administrators handle the case…

Meanwhile, Google Translate doesn’t cease to amuse. I am off marshalling my 9-6X.

  24. Chrismk1 says:

There’s a very active thread going on a “Bring-a-Trailer” website – so am working to cross-pollinate:
    http://bringatrailer.com/2012/01/16/breaking-story-120-car-saab-factory-museum-bankruptcy-sell-off/

Also, I wanted to lighten things up here with a little humor !

The absurdity of it all reminds of those COW ECONOMICS jokes which I have shamelessly copied and modified to suit the situation…

    AMERICAN CORPORATION
    You have two Chryslers.
You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one.
You force the two K-cars to produce the milk of four VWs.
You are surprised when one the Aries drops dead.
You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have down
    sized and are reducing expenses.
    Your stock goes up.

    FRENCH CORPORATION
    You have two 2CVs.
You go on strike because you want three SMs.
You go to lunch and drink wine.
    Life is good.

    JAPANESE CORPORATION
    You have two Bluebirds.
You redesign them so they are one tenth the size of an ordinary
AMC Matador and produce twenty times the milk.
They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded roads.
Most are at the top of their traveling class.

    GERMAN CORPORATION
You have an AMG and M.
You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give
excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour all day.
Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.

    ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two Ferraris but you don’t know where they are.
While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman in each one.
You break for lunch. They each stop by with a bottle of wine.
    Life is good.

    SWEDISH CORPORATION
You have a museum of SAABs and you sell them to GM.
The new General Master whips them and lets them all out.
For the rest of your life you try to find them all.
The tears threaten to drown you.

Good to hear the Trollihattan home team is running down the list and checking it twice; sure hope their industrial history isn’t gutted and lost in the slipstream of of corporate takeovers and take downs. MMA seems less bloody than this mess.

  25. David R Rochefort says:

I had a 1985 904M. Ivory, but I like to tell everyone it was “Alabaster Yellow” (Saab fans will get it). I hate GM for this just as I hate GM for doing away with Oldsmobile (I had a 1973 Cutlass Supreme). Why can’t they keep all this like South Bend did with the Studebaker Museum?

  26. Hubert says:

No word can say how we feel. The Swedish government should do everutyhing to keep Saab’s heritage on it’s place in Trollhattan.

  27. Dan says:

Scrolling through the car photos nearly brought me to tears. So truly sad. Thanks GM for another example of how a corporation should not act. I spent my entire career in Corp America and hope my actions were more humane and responsible. Sometimes there is more than the bottom line. But, hey, we own GM don’t we? Ha!

Can you imagine what other “Saab goodies” (other than vehicles) will end up in the trash bin? All the history, photos, records, et al into the trash.

Thanks Swade for your hard work. Scrolling thru the photos gave me a feel of what it was like to be there. And it is of some comfort to share the pain with others as in a funeral, which this is. As was posted above, I never post online, but this was too important not to. Unfortunately it’ll fall on deaf ears (other than fellow Saabinestas).
