Toyota 86 Convertible – Just Say No

Toyota have released images of the Toyota 86 Convertible today and I have to say, I’m not a fan.

The hardtop Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ both look like nicely resolved cars with a purpose. They’re small, good value performance coupes. They don’t look exotic, but they look like fun.

The Toyota 86 Convertible doesn’t look like performance driving fun. It looks like poseur cruising. To me, that confuses the message that this car intended to create.

The car will debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which starts next week.

What say ye?

  1. Looks like a bar of soap!!! And in white with white interirors it looks especially hideous. But tasteless people will buy it for sure. Why not make it electric too while you are at it…..

  2. The thing is, people are going to want it, which means that Toyota would be daft not to build it. Plus, the added volume will help make the entire project viable, meaning projects like this might get greenlighted more often.

  3. Roadsters have been around far longer than tin tops so there is no conflict between being a sports car and a convertible. It looks great and is stunning in white, lets see how it drives.

  4. Hate to say it, but I like it. Looks like the front has some interesting aerodynamic tricks to it with the fenders looking like air scoops. Rather cool.

  5. I think there are much better looking convertibles on the market. It is OK, but white is not the best color for this, and the large wheels with the low-profile tires are just look too large compared to the rest of the car. It’s a bit of a mess.

  6. Being a 2013 asian car i think its kinda quirky, let be there is no real depth in the quirky. Toyota should be able to do better by now, they have been around for a while. But this is an obvious poseurmobile exactly a la Audi TT if you ask me. I remember how the first generation of the TT was written down by the motoring journalists for its driving capabilities and later it showed it was even dangerous in traffic. But whatever shortcomings this car had, for Audi it was all about strategy -to attract the poseur’s and now we all know it was a good strategy. Some homebrew analytics.

  7. I think it looks like a FINE “bar of soap” that may people may purchase and enjoy (depending on taste and purpose;)). Funny with that promotion video where at 01:50 into the video this “bar of soap” actually slides a bit sideways through a curve on asphalt, where everything else in the video is sleek and serene (like you would expect from the latest Rolls-Royce or Bentley promo). Oh well. Living in Tokyo I could try to find out what is REALLY going on here….

    1. LOL. Bar of soap indeed. The nature in this video is amazing. Why on earth would anyone start drifting while driving around in this beautiful environment? Especially its hard to understand why that petite blonde that drives the car in the closeup at 00:55 would do this. Is this a real toyota promotion or is it just some drag show satire? Just pause the vid any time you will se its some guy with huge sunglasses and a bad wig that is more yellow than blonde.
