AER-085 Sold – Remains In Saaby Tasmanian Hands

[hr] I got a bunch of messages from people last week, letting me know that my old 1985 Saab 900 16V Turbo had come on the market again. Was I tempted? Well, it’d be nice but I have zero space and zero funds at the moment. And a few projects on the horizon. If it was Bill and my old white 99Turbo, then maybe (hint, hint 😉 ). But otherwise, no. This was the car I bought to replace my Viggen back in 2007. It’s believed to be one of the press cars that Saab bought in to Australia to […]

At the end of the world…..

Could this be the northernmost Saab ….. (cue Clarkson voice) ….. in the world? Arjan Bronkhorst is a professional photographer – and a Saab fan – so when he spotted an early model Saab 900 abandoned in Spitsbergen he just had to get a shot of it. Link: Arjan Bronkhorst Photography. Make sure you click to see this one enlarged. If you’re like me, you might be asking “Where the heck is Spitsbergen?” Well, if you thought Sweden was pretty far north, think again….. Forgive me, but I’m doing my work from Wikipedia here. Spitsbergen is part of Norway and […]

Saabosphere – links we liked this week

It’s been another big week or so in the immediate life and times of Saab Automobile. We’re relieved to be in calmer waters now, but we know that there’s a lot of work to be done and we have plans in place to do it. You can read some initial information about Project Cheetah in English here, or in Swedish here. I’ll see if there’s some more information about this process that I can bring forward in the near future. —— If you’re still catching up on what’s happened with Saab this week, the best summary news article is at […]

Someone stole my Saab collection!

I’ve known Markus L in an email sense for a few years now. He’s one of the regulars from my SU days. I’ve seen some of his cars in photos from time to time, but there are usually long intervals in between viewings. When you meet a lot of people and see a lot of cars (in a virtual sense) it’s easy to forget just who’s got what. I got these photos from Markus in my inbox today. I was quite familiar with his fully Hirsched Turbo X and the black 900, but not so familiar with the Viggen. All […]

Driving a legend – Saab 900 Turbo

You’ve all most likely seen this image before. It’s one of the better known images of the Saab 900 Turbo. The photo was taken for Saab’s 50th Anniversary marketing campaign, back in 1997. A calendar was made featuring this image and a number of others like it. Remember the Saab 99 EMS in motion, or the Saab 92? All of those shots were taken around the same time and all were used in the calendar. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Nicklas A at the Saab Museum here in Trollhattan. Whilst the majority of vehicles used in the calendar […]

Traveller’s Saabs

My Viggen-owning compatriot from Sydney, Richo, is currently skiing around the US. That’s his cover at least. I suspect he’s just trying to pick up chicks in exotic locations, like Wyoming, but that’s just me…. He shot through these photos of a Saab owned by a local lady running a gas station in Jackson Hole. Told her we’d make her famous. See what I mean? And he also spotted this one on the road somewhere in Utah…. —— Local Tasmanian lens genius, Stu, recently took a family holiday in New Zealand and sent through a shot of the only Saab […]

Saab 900 photo day

I took the car for a quick wash today and thought I’d give the new camera a run. I didn’t have much time, so I just flew around a few buildings here in Hobart. All of the photos are enlargeable and this first one is also in big format on the Saab desktop wallpaper section of this site. —— This one was taken at the side of the Hobart concert hall. There’s no street parking here, so I had to take it up onto the foot path. Thankfully it was wide enough. If I could take it again I’d get […]

More of that 900 SPG from Boston

Johnny Del was at the New England Auto Show earlier this week representing Trollhattan Saab and aside from the Turbo X, the other big attraction was the restored 1985 Saab 900 SPG that they had on show there. I’ve shown some in-progress shots of this car (here and here) and now it’s time for the finished product. I don’t know where these guys get their genuine parts from, but they sure do one heck of a job bringing these cars back to life. Yet another immaculate Saab joins the GM Heritage collection in the US. Click to enlarge. There’s a […]

900 Aero prototype restoration continues

You might remember the story of Peter W in Sweden, who recently picked up one of the uber-rare pearl white 900 Aeros for restoration. I covered the first part of his story here. This is definitely a story worth following, especially if you’re thinking of attending the Saab Festival in 2009 as Peter hopes to have the car finished and ready for the event. Peter’s now started a thread on Saab Central where he’s posting updates to the restoration story. There’s a bucketload of work to be done on this car and he’s already taken to it like a hungry […]

New England Auto Show preview – Part 2

GM are rebuilding a classic, black 900 Turbo to show along side the Turbo-X at the New England Auto Show later this month. If you haven’t seen the Part 1 photos of this restoration, then click here – Saab 900 restoration photos. The restoration continues in earnest so as to have the car ready in time for the big show. These photos came in yesterday from SaabUSA and as you can see, they’re making some good progress. Gripen received the photos yesterday as well and I’m sure he’s not the only only one wondering where they get all the bits […]
